Puppy and Kitten Care

You brought home a new little pet.
This is an exciting milestone—and an important responsibility. Our staff at Cameron Veterinary Hospital loves helping new pet owners navigate the early stages of kitten and puppy care with confidence. We give puppies and kittens in the Sunnyvale area a lifelong foundation for wellness while supporting you in taking care of your young companion.
What Veterinary Care is Needed for Puppies and Kittens?
The first year of your pet’s life includes many vital milestones. We recommend bringing your new puppy or kitten in for an initial exam no later than 6–8 weeks of age. During their first vet visit, our friendly team will assess their overall health and begin preventive care. Throughout the first year, your puppy or kitten will receive multiple rounds of vaccines, may be microchipped, and—when the time is right—be spayed or neutered. Each of these steps plays a key role in supporting the development of your young companion. Our veterinarians can also give you general guidance and answer questions you may have as a new pet owner.

Protecting from Parasites in Young Pets
Many puppies and kittens are born with intestinal parasites or acquire them shortly after birth. Early routine deworming is a standard part of our care plan. We will also perform fecal exams to identify and treat any parasites that might be present.
At the appropriate age, our staff will start your pet on safe and effective parasite preventatives for heartworms, fleas, and ticks. Early prevention protects your growing pet from avoidable discomfort and illness as they explore the world around them.

FAQs
Vaccinations typically start between 6–8 weeks of age and continue every 3–4 weeks until your pet is 16–18 weeks old. Staying on schedule builds strong immunity. If your pet misses their vaccine booster by too many days, the series will need to be restarted.
Yes! We’re here to support you through every aspect of your new pet’s care. No question is too small, and it is always better to talk to a professional rather than trust the internet for answers.
Common signs include bloating, diarrhea, scooting, or visible worms in their stool. However, some pets show no symptoms at all, which is why we recommend deworming and fecal exams.
Our staff will discuss the ideal timing during your visits. Most puppies and kittens are spayed or neutered around 6 months of age, depending on breed and health.
Bring any records from the breeder, shelter, or previous caregiver. If possible, bring a recent stool sample from your pet in case we need to run a fecal exam. Jotting down your questions ahead of time is also helpful—we’re here to make sure you feel fully informed.
